A sore throat is usually caused by a virus and it has to run its course. The usual treatments for a sore throat include:

Increase your liquid intake.
Warm tea with honey is a favorite home remedy.
Use a steamer or humidifier in your bedroom.
Gargle with warm salt water several times daily: ¼ tsp. salt to ½ cup water.
Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol Sore Throat®, Tempra®) or ibuprofen (Motrin IB®, Advil®).
If you smoke, stop smoking and avoid second hand smoke.

Usually when our throats are sore, our bodies our fighting off an infection of some sort. So besides rest, try hot tea with honey to help sooth the pain. Another good remedy: a cup of hot water (boiling- like when you are making hot tea) with lemon juice and honey stirred well. I had a sore throat last month on and off, it was bad- I went to the Dr. to make sure I didn't have strep throat. He took a throat culture and it came back negative. Try the above and drinks tons of water and double/triple your vitamin C intake.

I hate sore throats. The only way I've ever gotten any relief was to gargle with hot salty water. It does work for a little while. You just have to keep repeating it every hour or so. Give it a try.

Salt water gargles, hard candies, sprays (for example, Chloraseptic) and lozenges can provide temporary pain relief. (Caution: Lozenges and hard candy are a choking hazard for children. Avoid their use in young children.) A humidifier may be helpful in relieving symptoms, especially in sore throats caused by mouth breathing and dry air. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen may help control the pain.

if you have any cider vinegar gargle with that. If not, use regular distilled vinegar diluted in half with water and gargle. I used to gargle with salt water, until a co worker told me about this method. I tried it and it really works.
