I've decided to take a wack at designing gift baskets for people. I've always done it for friends and family and they LOVE what i create. I will have all categories from kids age 7 to grandparents. Under each category there will be subcategories...based on what their loved ones may be interested in. I will then create a gift basket chock full of goodies that coinside with what they've told me. Does anyone think i can make a go of this? What are your pros and cons? Please don't be rude. And thanks for your comments.

You are going to have to address price. You will need a range of prices too. One person may want a $15 basket while another might want $50.

And I think you are goin got have to ..... narrow down a bit. you can 't be all things to all people. To do a NASCAR basket for one person, a flower garden based basket for another, fine wine for a third, Sponge Bob Square Pants for the next ... well you are going to have a huge outlay of cash. If you have several categories such as outdoors themed, gardening themed, cooking themed, dog themed etc baskets you will be able to purchase things in bulk discount prices and save more. Do you see what I mean?

also your profit will be related to how much time you spend making the basket. Shopping for items counts as time spent on the basket. the more streamline and efficient you business the better.

I think it is a great idea. How about putting up flyers with pictures of the baskets on bulletin board in the local supermarket, library, church etc? Also, check out doing flea markets. I am saying this because of the costs you will incur to build the website and advertising. Since this is a small business, I would not recommend a loan. Use the costs from sales to fund the start up costs for the website and advertising. As for advertising, make sure you determine your target audience (brides, baby showers, kids birthdays etc)

Good Luck! Lisa

The really important thing is not "they love what I create," but do you "love" doing this. In other words, are you truly excited about creating these baskets or are you more focused on the money? Don't pursue a business just for the money. The absolute key to happiness in a career is to pursue our passion, and I am convinced that when we do so, sufficient for our needs will follow. Great financial wealth may not naturally follow but loving what we do brings a fulfillment that cannot be measured in dollars. Happiness is a natural byproduct of doing what we love. The same claim cannot be made by everyone who has amassed great wealth. My encouragement to you is to believe in yourself, follow your passion, don't share your dreams with everyone as most people will pull you down rather than encourage you... Find someone you trust and who you know will be supportive, we all need cheerleaders in our lives, and talk to them. Enthusiasm, I believe, comes from the root word entheos which is "of God." If you're enthusiastic about this then recognize from whence it comes. Step forth boldly and trust in Him. It is what I did over 22 years ago, and, at 67, I'm still excited about being in business for myself.
