The best bars I've been in, and I've been all over the country, have different areas within the bar....dance floor, lounge, an outside patio area ( the best patios are always on the roof so you can look out over the city), a "tavern area" with pool tables and darts, etc., with these being separate areas within the bar (the dance floor can't be heard in the lounge)

The bartenders make the bar. If I am greeted in a friendly way by an attractive, yet not overtly sexual bartender who remembers what I am drinking and can make witty conversation with all the patrons, I feel at home. Lighting is important, also. Too dim, I feel like I am in a pickup joint. Too light, it feels like a cafeteria. Fair prices help, too!! And of course, entertainment. It depends on what you are looking for there. Live entertainment aside, a good jukebox with something for everyone keeps the atmosphere interesting. Give me these things, and I will be back every weekend!

It would be nice if there were an area that was 'quiet', enough so that you could talk to your companions and hear what they said. This would be in addition to the area where the music and/or TV is so loud that you cannot hear yourself think.

service. quality of food and drinks. music, either live or jukebox selection. cleanliness. control of the atmosphere by staff/management. Other customers.

first of all its the people inside that make it the it the music and the food they serve !! and location location location !!!

it would have to be segmented,a room for those to dance, room for those who want to talk and watch tv, and room for pool tables, and of course good music, cheap drinks with no cover.
