My experience has been that jump drives work with both Macs and PCs with no problem - you may have a bad USB connector on the drive or the comptuer, or the computer may have an under-powered USB connection - and yes, if you re-format the drive, you will lose the information, although you could copy it off first on another computer and the format it.

Macs can read FAT32 drives but PCs can't read Mac formatted drives, so you have to copy the information to your Mac and then format it as Fat32 on the PC. Then put the information you saved on the Mac back on the USB drive. Macs and PCs will both be able to access it then.
