I mostly agree. Most people live their lives wanting more and more and cannot rest until they get more. Unfortunately, what they think they want isn't always what they need, and therefore, they never get satisfied. It is a neverending search for something real.

I'm sure some men do and some men don't. For the majority of men I would disagree. Seeing as how Thoreau was a recluse and never married I'm sure he was very desperate. Personally I am quite content with my life right now and do not feel any desperation. But I'm sure some bad things could happen to me and that would change my disposition.

One thing that you have to remember about Thoreau is that he was as egotistic as he was arrogant. He was a recluse that was made famous for his meaningless paradoxes. He lacked the spiritual impulsiveness of a true poet. If he would have held his originality without caring just how original he was, his fascination would have been irresistible.

When Thoreau lived that was the condition of "men". Since then Western Civilization has finally progressed where much of the masses have homes, jobs, TV's and football. Humanity grew up.

Knowing Thoreau as being an individual I would think he had thoughts of how humans follow the crowd in their plight to be right or to belong--in a way of 'sheep being led to the slaughter'.--Not really knowing whats going on, and maybe not caring

In contrast, we see the radical elements such as the terrorists leading lives of fanatical desperation.---Just following the "maddening crowd" --no matter what the consequences.

I agree, and I think that the key word here is "quiet." Most people settle for what's easy, convenient, and comfortable. In abandoning or estranging themselves from any higher aspirations, they basically live in a state of muted hopelessness without necessarily being fully aware of the fact.

I agree. The human race will never stop searching for perfection and satisfaction. Unfortunately, no matter what people have, it's not enough. Also, people seem to be intent on having others believe what they believe. If you believe differently, you're wrong. What a waste of energy to not let people be themselves.

Yes I do agree. That quote means to me that men grow up to be something they're not and they have this secret part of them that wants to get out.Like how we say guys are "tough" but deep inside they may be weak and trying to act tough.Or how we sometimes say that guys show no emotion. That can and cannot be true.Guys are desperate to have good things in their lives'.So as are women.

Well, no. I teach school, and I can tell you that while the students may be desperate, they are not quiet.

If we take "desperation" as perhaps "struggle," then sure. We all do struggle, don't we? And in many ways, a struggle for one's life could be called "desperate."
