The screen is like black and white but has neutral colors and then like a old tv, the color will *pop* back into it and stay that way for either a few mins or a few hrs.

It has gone months like this and now all of a sudden every day after being on for 20 min or so, the color comes on.

Any ideas?

Sounds like your monitor is going. The old ones are a lot like TV's in some ways, but in general, nobody repairs them, it can be dangerous. I'd ask for one of those LCD monitors for Christmas.

when that happens you might check the connection on the back of the computer and monitor connection. But usually when this flicker happens it's a capacitor that is going out. There ARE places to get monitors repaired. Depending on the type of monitor etc the repair can be 80.00 for a 20".. 55.00 for a 17" CRT... Flat panels are different. These prices range for different areas. How long into warranty are you? Most monitors have 3 year warranties now.

Monitors are way to cheap to pour money into repairing them. You'd still have an old worn out monitor that might quit again any time.
First though, try the monitor on a different computer to make sure it's the problem.

Move any speakers wires or other things away from the monitor. Make sure all wires are connected properly , replace them or try other ones because you might not be able to tell if they are damaged.

Other then that I cannot tell you what? Even though there has to be other reasons perhaps the monitor is damaged but that is more unlikely.

Might try updating your graphics card drivers. Also install the latest version of directx through microsoft. And see if your monitor manufacturer's website has any updated drivers or compatibility issues. Depending on how long you have had your monitor you might be able to return it to your manufacturer for a refund or exchange.
