There are many cause of blindness and low vision some people are born with it some have accidents some are caused by other conditions things like albinism glaucoma cataracts macular degeneration and many many more way to many to list. also just because someone says they are blind or uses a guide dog dosnt mean they have no vision only a small percentage have nothing. there are also many ways to help someone who has a vision impairment but the first thing is dont expect the person automatically needs help most will ask for it whether it is getting directions reading something help crossing a road and others. You can also still ask them if they want help but dont feel like they are being ungrateful if they say no.

Apart from medical causes, some of the reasons people become blind would be: looking directly at any exceptionally bright object like a flash of lightning or sun (for an extended period), welding process without protective shield, sudden explosion as in a oil refinery fire, etc. Watching too much of TV without blinking often also may gradually make your eyes weak and lead to blindness.
Small pox and diabetes may also cause blindness if not treated in time or properly.
