Christian is the major religion in America, yes, so it is considered a christian nation, politically.
But realistically, we are a mixture of religions as we are a mixture of nationalities and cultures.
the problems occur when people who have no capacity for reason think their nationality, religion, or culture, is better than any other and should be the dominate one. It is the same type of logic lacking thought that causes most of the problems in the world.

On what basis is it a Christian nation? The first people living here were not Christians (native americans). In fact, there is substantial evidence Muslims came to America from Western Africa before Columbus. In fact the maps Columbus used to sail the Atlantic were taken from Muslim merchants and explorers from Islamic Spain. Today America is a nation of many religions and it's wrong to assume it belongs to one religion.

The USA has been known the world over as a Christian nation and our justice system and various other policies have been based on religious principles until now, we are seen now as hypocritical because what the world sees is we are liars, arrogant, lustful , and double dealing caring only for ourselves and trying to buy ourselves out of every situtation. Presently we are becoming known to be less and less christian.

Some time in the 1890's, I think is was 1892 the Supreme Court in one of its rulings said so. The ruling was in reference to the federal governments problems with the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints (Mormons). The Mormon Church at that time was advocating plural marriage and this was considered an impediment to Utah obtaining statehood. Also, I believe that the federal government was threatening to confiscate church property.
At any rate, the Court ruled that plural marriage was in violation of the laws of a Christian nation.
Before any non-Christians become apoplectic at that revelation, the Court was referring to our culture. Our culture is, or was based on Christian ethics. Today, there are a lot of people in this country who don't like that idea.
What I find strange about this is that many biblical heroes were practitioners of plural marriage. The bible is pretty specific in it's condemnation of homosexuality (not homosexuals).

It is a Nation of many Religions. The problem is, everyone thinks they should be the only one. Respect others even if they do not believe what you do.

It depends on what you mean by that.
An overwhelming majority of Americans claim to be Christian.
Our country was founded on biblical principles. (Judeo Christian ethics).
We do not have an established religion.
