no Mentors as they were growing up.
For a feeling of belonging.
For a feeling of power.
For a feeling of being in a united community, and a part of something more important than they alone could achieve on their own.

There can be many different reasons why, but they are not getting any family attention at home. A gang gives children a sense of belonging, and they are somehow missing that @ home. Single mothers or parents that both work and are not home for their kids after school tend to have a higher rate of gang participation. If there is someone giving a child the attention that they need, they would not feel the need to seek the negative attention that gang bangers seek...

They want to belong. Unfortunately their judgment is not at it's best at this age. They need direction from adults until they are responsible enough to know the right from wrong choices. There is always an excuse why an adult couldn't be there for the child. But yet there are many single working parents that manage to know where their children are and to find appropriate activities for them so they don't get involved in gangs. Yes, It does mean giving up all free time and being a child's parent, not their friend.

I agree with the first answerer...I think that often the families they come from are so discombobulated that they do not even qualify as families, so therefore, these kids join gangs as kind of like a substitute family, to belong, to be a part of, to identify with.

I wish we knew the answer to that one but I believe children miss the extended family and friends that used to exist within familes and neighborhoods that seems to be lost now to a great degree. They go outside the family to look for a connection and a feeling of belonging. With so many mothers and dads working long hours children are left on their own to much with out the guidence of loving adults to correct them and love them. I know my children were alone to much and I am thankful it worked out all right for them. It doesn't for everyone.

Because they are not being shown the appropritate affection by their parents or family, so they turn to a gang who becomes their new family.

Kids want to feel that they "belong". This need used to be fulfilled at home - belonging to a family, and the neighborhood, or community. Now, everyone is too busy and the family unit has basically disappeared, thanks to sensationalist news shows and other resources, the we have become to paranoid to be neighborly; leaving no place else for the kids to belong.
