Yikes, what an ugly situation. :(
Since you "don't have the best credit," be very skeptical (which it sounds like you were in this situation). I've heard many stories about businesses taking advantage of people with low credit scores because they know how desperate people can become to be given a chance. But, as you know, this always comes with a price, and it's usually more money up front or a higher interest rate on a loan.
Whether your husband misheard the salesman or the salesman flat-out lied, you don't have a case. You need to incur some monetary loss. If the salesman told you up front that there is no money down, the contract says no money down, and you sign the contract for the car promising to pay off a loan but the dealership refuses to give you your car without a down payment after you signed the contract, you might have a case. But since you didn't officially buy the car yet you can't sue. Plus, the advertised "no money down" was by word of mouth, not on paper, so it wouldn't hold up in court. (Although I'm sure your blood is boiling and you'd like nothing more to sue him!)

You can only sue somebody for "misrepresentation" if you "detrimentally relied" on the representation when you contracted. But here, there was no contract. However you may have a different argument. I don't know how far it will get you, but if the rates are reasonable without any money down, you could speak to the sales manager and say you are thinking of bringing a "breach of contract" suit to compel "specific performance" of a contract they made with you. When the salesman called your husband (it doesn't matter it was him since you are one and the same under the law) he made an OFFER to sell you the car for no money down - that offer was OPEN for a reasonable amount of time (specifically the time it took you to arrive) - and when you arrived you ACCEPTED the OFFER and now they have backed out of the contract. The sales manager might want to avoid subsequent issues and do what he can to get you into your car - just remember the less money you put down the harsher those payments are - make sure you could live with that.

FIRST OF ALL. NEVER!!! I mean NEVER!!! NEVER EVER!!! talk to a car salesman without your husband. You are going to want to be able to lay some of the blame on him to! Also you will need a witness to be there when Mr. Slick tells you how great you look in "your" new ride. (and it's still in the lot)(and you haven't even introduced yourself) (your new ride - HA) I went to a salesman My Dad recommended. He tried to put me in everything except what I said I wanted. I went back about six times. I saw the kind of car I wanted and he said it was outta my range. I saw the same car on thier website, I made a reservation to see it. The new salesman heard I had talked with thte other guy and was going to pass me back like a cheap bootle of cologne. NO!!! I will not deal with him. I in charge here. I know what I want and what I am going to pay. I bought the car her tried to steer me clear of. Been happy ever since. I got a good car, the deal I wanted, and I did it MY WAY!
Thank goodness the other twenty deals in my life sucked it was about time I learned something.

Car salesmen are shady and will tell you just about anything. And NO you can't sue...if you could sue everyone who lied to you we'd need a lot more judges and lawyers. You shouldn't be trying to get something for nothing!

They were probably trying to get your husband to come down and cosign for you. It's not very honest but you can't do much about it.
