The weight difference between the 883 and the 1200 is minimal. If you are going to buy a Sportster, buy a 1200 Custom, from 2004 on. They have a bigger gas tank, and a rubber mounted motor. The engine mounts are basically a heavy duty rubber band, but they help. The nice thing is you can buy a used Sportster at a greatly lower cost than a new one, as they have as bad a resale value as any other M/C out there. With this being said, you can find a nice 04, with low miles, under 5,000 miles for around $8500 if you look on line. An older 1200, say a 2002 for about $5-6 thou. There are definitely better bikes out there for you as a first, or second bike. Look at the Honda watercooled 1100 Spirits, or Sabers, or the Yamaha 1100 V-Stars. Keep in mind, your routine maintenance on the Sportster is going to be at least three times the maintenance on the Honda. Dont worry about top speed because a Sporty 1200 or an 883, will run fast enough to get you a fat ticket, as well as a 600 HondaVLX, , or a 750 Spirit. Look hard, read some road test online, ride a few if you can. Then decide. Good luck.

There is a difference between an 883 and a 1200. The 1200 is more powerful than an 883. As a matter of fact, look at the horsepower ratings of your 883 to a big twin. They are very close! Putting in a big bore kit into an 883 will change the engine size to 1200 cc's but there is more to a 1200 than just the cc's--the transmission gears are also different. I think this is why so many people feel that the Sportster vibrates too much--they bore it out without looking at the total picture. If you like the 1200 Nightster, I say go for it. The power of any motorcycle rests in the right hand. As for it being lighter, it's because a lot of sheet metal has been taken away from the bike. As for the comments that Harley's are slow, I have to ask compared to what? If you compare Harley's to a crotch rocket, yes they are. If you compare, especially the Sportster line, to a other (Japanese Cruisers) you'll blow there doors off.

Any Sportster is barely a motorcycle. But if you must, get the 883
Before you spend the money, at least look at Japanese bikes. The Kaw 800 is twice the bike of a Sporty and about 1/2 the cost.

Go to Harley's web site and click on the model bike you want. Go to specs and pricing and they give you a lot of information regarding seat height, length, ground clearance etc.

the older 883 will beat you to death riding, very uncomfortable. the new ones motor are now mounted on rubber to avoid this old problem. look around for something more comfortable to ride. i reccomend the honda 600 VLX. good bike will last along time. and comfortable, it has the lowest seat height of any cruiser, including the rebel 250.
