To an extent, yes. Now a days it's good for kids to have cell phones for emergencies. Also, a lot of childrens phones come with a tracking device (Disney Mobile...ect.) and let's say, worst case senerio, your child is kidnapped, the police and you as the parent can pinpoint where your child is.

For me it is crucial to have a cell phone because i worry about emergencies. And once while driving i got a flat tire in the middle of the night on the highway. Without it i would have been a young girl walking around alone in the middle of the night in a bad area trying to find a pay phone. So for adults, yes, crucial.
For kids...i don't know. I don't think so, but maybe once they are in middle school or high school, and start going to do things on their own, it is good to have one for Emergencies ONLY. Especially once they start to drive.

My child has one for emergencies and she can only dial home, my my and her father's cell, her grandparents cell and 911. It's programmed in her phone and because there are no buttons on her phone but 1,2,3 &4 she can't dial anyone else....

I Think kids 14 up are okay to have phones. any smaller what do they it for? u know?
