I am a republican but I do agree that just because of your political affiliation, it doesn't mean a person is exempt from acting on evil. Everybody is human and makes errors and mistakes. I hate to think about it but I'm sure there are. My husband's grandfather is a democrat and he one of the kindest most wonderful men I have ever known. Not all democrats are bad and not all republicans are good.

How about Strom Thurmond? The one who voted against civil rights and yet exploited/raped a black teenager in his family's employment? Didn't publicly acknowledge their child's existence at all, though he did buy her off with some cash over the years.

From Wikipedia:

Shortly after Thurmond's death on June 26, 2003, Essie Mae Washington-Williams publicly revealed that she was Strom Thurmond's illegitimate daughter. She was born to an African American maid, Carrie "Tunch" Butler (1909–1947), on October 12, 1925, when Butler was 16 and Thurmond was 22. Butler had been a servant in the Thurmond household. To this day, the specific relationship between Thurmond and the maid has never been made totally clear.

Thurmond met Washington-Williams when she was 16. He helped pay her way through college and later paid her sums of money in cash or, through a nephew, checks. These payments extended well into her adult life.[3] Washington-Williams has stated that she did not reveal she was Thurmond's daughter during his lifetime because it "wasn't to either advantage of either one of us" [3] and that she kept silent out of love and respect for her father.[4] She denies that there was an agreement between the two to keep her connection to Thurmond silent. [3]

After Washington-Williams came forward, the Thurmond family publicly acknowledged her parentage. Many close friends and staff members had long suspected this to have been the case, stating that Thurmond had always taken a great amount of interest in Washington-Williams and that she was granted a degree of access to the Senator more appropriate to a family member than to a member of the public.

I'm sure if we looked, we would find plenty of Republicans guilty of this. This is not a partisan thing. Republicans are just as capable of child abandonment. Political stances have nothing to do with it.

Last time I checked you were a human being long before you grew political affiliations. Guess what!! Politicians are not perfect. Marriages break up, spouses die, and sometimes they even pee. Why dont you find a new hobby instead of trying to stir the pot where it does not need it. As far as high morals...it takes a real prince of a man to serve his wife on her death bed with divorce papers.....maybe they should give Newt a monument.

I don't know any that abandoned children. But, I know in my own family: one that sexually abused their daughters and his wife beat the daughters half to death for tempting him to sin (my maternal grandparents); alcoholics who had mentally retarded children due to fetal ancohol syndrome; one who shook two of his daughters to the point of brain damage; one alcoholic who divorced his first wife, then never saw his son by her again (my paternal grandfather--is that abandonment?); one who forced his wife into having sex when his son would find him (to show what a man is!?!); and several who disowned and disavowed their intelligent, college-professor sister because she was a lesbian.

Yeah, great Conservative Christian Republicans all of them turned out to be! If this is what it means to be a good Christian, then I'm glad I am pagan!

I fostered 3 of them, but for their privacy sake I"m not giving you their names. My husband was also abandoned by his Republican, conservative Promise Keeper father--after he was done physically abusing him. Good enough, or should I find famous people? Are they the only ones that count?
