Depends on how much you are looking to spend. I run my equipment (guitars, bass, and vocal mic) into my computer.

Basically what you'll want is a good connection from your instrument to your sound card. If you have the extra money, go on Ebay and look up the following items (Ebay is the cheapest place I've seen them)...

Creative Labs Audigy 2 Soundcard (optional but will help in the long run)
Art StudioV3 Tube Preamp
A condensor mic (I use at home a Samson CL7)

Also get some good 1\4" cables if you don't already have them from your local guitar store or Radio Shack, and a 3 foot 1\4" input to 1\8" output.

Basically, you can run your guitar cable or microphone cable into the Preamp, and have the preamp run into the Soundcard via another 1\4" to 1\4" cable into the 1\4" to 1\8" cable. (This will all make sense once you actually see them...)

The preamp will give you better control of the levels when recording, and will make it sound more full.

As far as programs, I use either Magix 6 (don't get anything newer than that) or Magix Samplitude, or Cubase. Cubase records at a higher bitrate, but is a bit more complicated to use.

Also if you're looking for drums to add in with your guitar, there is a wonderful program called Fruity Loops, which you can download drum kits and use that as a beat box basically.

To go into further detail about how all these work and everything, feel free to email me at DrLorenzoLovegun@yahoo.com and I'll hit you back with some better explainations and more detailed step by step on how to use the various programs that are out (I can probably hook you up with one for free as well) I could explain them all here but I'm tired of typing at the moment LOL

Protools is just the industry standard. There are several good programs out there that are just as good and affordable. Like Logic and Cubase. I personally prefer Cubase.
If you DO indeed get into this, you should get a professional soundcard. I reccomend MOTU (Mark Of The Unicorn) Ive had a 2408 for a while and it is awesome!

you have a pair possibilities right here: a million. get a usb mic, some severe high quality studio headphones, and easy audio utility. extra suitable yet, get a mac and use garageband. I even have had certainly no problems with it and have created some super demos. 2. purchase a digital 4-, 8-, or 12-music recorder, some studio mics, some vocal effects pads (it is likewise possible to apply guitar effects pedals and pads), studio headphones, and hook all of it up on on your pc via the digital recorder. this demands no high priced utility, as you may blend and grasp precise on the recorder and deliver the full product on your pc. that's certainly the costlier, yet extra expert selection.
