It is called an "aglet". According to Wikipedia, "[a]n aglet or aiglet is the little plastic or metal cladding on the end of shoelaces (or any type of lace, though shoelaces are the most commonly referenced) that keeps the twine from unraveling."

This "little plastic thing" is called an acklet. I am not sure if it is spelled that way but it is pronounced AK-lit. I always wondered that and then on a T.V. show, there was a sort of dumb girl who loves shopping and a smart girl was trying to cut her down on her shoping habbits and she had to take the dumb ones credit cards and the dumb one was like "please just one pair of shoes, please!!!" then the smatr one said, "no!' then, "ok, just one shoe! Please?" then, "no!" then, "ok fine just one shoelace" "no!" then "fine. how about the little plastic thingy on the end that nobody knows what it is called. please!" then the smart one said "wait. do u mean an acklet? no for that too!" so that is how I learned that. But to make it short (i know....to late) it is called an acklet.
