Wealth: Was in land. Persons of power had power in that they held land in feudal tenure from a lord. They could support themselves from the land and grant land to warriors who could live on it and support the lords. But persons could also be given church offices (benefices), which also carried landed income in money or ag produce.
Sacraments: 1. Baptism 2. Confirmation 3. Communion 4. Absolution 5. Marriage 6. Holy Orders 7. Last rites. Very important
Spiritual penalties: Excommunication, interdict: Denial to the person of the sacraments. Need to stop church services when the interdicted person entered the church. Very bad in public opinion. Rulers excommunicated and under interdict might have their vassals released from their feudal vows of obedience. To be avoided if at all possible.
Inquisition: Not important during the European middle ages. Only afterwards in the Renaissance and enlightenment.
There was only one church then, which one might call the Latin church as opposed to the Greek orthodox.
