Stomach ache in a child can be the most frustrating of all the childhood illnesses. There is a seemingly unending list of causes, from too much candy, to flu, to appendicitis. Many cases of stomach ache are short lived and resolve in time with or without treatment. The problem comes in deciding if that 7:00AM complaint of stomach ache your child makes as your family gets ready for work and school is a math test at school or the beginning of something that will need a trip to the doctor. Some children have naturally "sensitive" stomachs and stress at home or school will cause stomach ache that does not have a medical cause, but has very real pain. This needs your attention as much as a stomach virus. They usually get better with some reassurance from you and by removing the cause of the stress when possible. Pain from too much candy and rich food are usually accompanied by gas and cramps, and get better after a bowel movement. If your child is younger, a gentle tummy rub while sitting your child on the toilet may give comfort.

Serious causes of pain will usually be associated with vomiting, diarrhea and/or fever, but not always. Pain that is sharp, comes on suddenly, and/or causes your child to bend over, draw up his/her knees and/or interferes with walking is something you need to have evaluated by the doctor ASAP. If vomiting and/or diarrhea are present, or the pain is still present or worse after a couple of hours, you will want to call your doctor or healthcare provider for instructions. A growing concern is food contamination. Pay attention to what your child eats when away from home when possible.

He could have a slight irritation or allergic reaction to the food and it's causing his GI tract to cause pain towards him. If it continues, you should take him to the doctor.
