The idea of atlas carrying the world is somewhat if an innacuracy. According the the original Greek accounts, Atlas was, after the Gods defeated the Titans, assigned the task of holding up the vault of the sky on his shoulders. The idea of his holding the earth was brought into colloqueal expression in the 1800 through misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the story.
