I have an older Mac ibook (alot of times they are called the clamshell ibooks - its about 6 years old). I have OS 10 on it, but I think it needs some other updates. Is it better to update this or is it so old that I'm better off buying new?

I empathize, I also had to make that decision.
Here's what I decided. The old laptop worked well but slow by todays standards and if I upgraded all I could I wouldn't reach todays level of performance, and cost to upgrade the old one was over half the cost of the new quicker and better lookin' bigger laptop. So I bought a 17" new laptop and I use my old one for when I travel, and when the neighbourhood kids visit when their folks come over they are allowed to play with the old one ONLY. I'm happy with my choice.

"Older" means lots to me, I am running some 6320CD machines, a 165 notebook, a PowerPC G3, and a clamshell 233 (1993-1997!!!) and some Imacs, one tray, two slot loaders! My network has 70 other systems, including a DEC Alpha! All run OS8 thru 10 or GNU/Linux.

I would feel lucky to have a Clamshell! But, if you need some new technology that is included in the new laptops, go for it!

That older system is probably still worth some buck$ on ebay!

Don't spend money on it. Those old G3s were some of the worst computers ever built. Almost every one we had went bad. The new Intel ibooks are far better computers and you can put XP on them along with OSX if you want.
