Berkeley is the #1 public college in the nation, UCLA is #4. Both are good schools but the campus environment and the surrounding areas are very different. You should visit the UCLA campus before you apply.

All things being equal, Berkeley will take someone local instead of someone outside of the area.

First of all, apply to both schools and see what happens. If one accepts you and not the other, the problem is solved. If they both accept you, I would go ahead and follow your parents' advice for now. Once you get used to college and figure out exactly what you want to do, you could always switch.
You're only in 10th grade, and I know it's important to start planning early for college, but I wouldn't stress too much about it right now.

I did not have a close relationship with my parents when I left to college. I learned that I was spoiled, as I would get back to my dorm mom or dad were not there ready with dinner. In time, I got closer to my parents and currently have a better realtionship with them. Parents are never ready to let go of their children. Do what makes you happy, what ever you decided it will turn out good in the end.

You need to consider whether it's more important for you to be closer to family or to experience life away from your family. If you go to the school nearby, you don't have to worry about a meal plan, housing, or laundry, but you won't gain the experience of living on your own. You have a couple of years, but consider which experience is more important for you.

Cal is great..I wished I lived in Berkeley. But if you want to move out its cool, but move out across town and go to Stanford. (I hear the Boos already). But you live in the shadow of great schools so enjoy them...and remember there is always the Ted's Auto Body School.

you should go to wherever you want. apply to berkeley, and any other school that you would consider going to, just so you have options. but ultimately, you should go wherever you want.
