I have a drag truck in which I use a 700 R-4 out of a Z-28 Camaro. I have it in a "74" C-10 with a built 350, and a 3.73:1 positive traction rear end. The engine is making lots of power, and I won't go into detail about the engine, but its on the up side of 500 horses. No you don't need a computer to operate the 700, but you do need to use a different valve body "IF" the transmission is later than an "84" model. I own a transmission shop, and deal with these all the time. A lot of people don't want to use these trannys, due to there are some weak parts in them, but change the weak parts, and you have a very good tranny. I have beat mine to no end for the last 6-7 years and it hasn't given a bit of trouble.
You will have to have it rebuilt. If it lost 3-4 gears then the band is fried, and/or the (weak link) drum has let go. I used a Kevlar band and an all steel clutch drum. I put about $400 in parts into mine, that were made for racing and that was 6-7 years ago. Talk to someone at TCI or a company that sells racing parts for the 700. I have the best of both worlds in mine. I have a 3,000 stall converter that has lock-up that I wired off the brake light switch, and used a pressure switch that is a 40-45 on the lock-up. Works real good!!! I used racing clutches, and packed all the clutches into the drums i could get. It seems like I had one of the drums machined to accept more clutches. I also used a Corvette governor, and a shift kit from TCI that will rattle your teeth when you are standing on it, but shifts smoothe when normal driving. The low 1st gear gets me out of the hole, and when it shifts to second it just goes like crazy. I love this transmission, and for all the nay sayers, they don't know what they are talking about. I run my truck every week at the drag strip, and I stomp a lot of mustangs with it. So there, if no one believes me, then I don't care. If you have that thing rebuilt also have a aftermarket beefed up planet gear put in it. You WON'T be sorry you did. You got to find someone who knows how to build transmissions, and have them do it up right.
The center in the clutch drum is weak, and the stock one will break out in the center, and this is when you loose 3-4 gears.
Make sure you set up your TV cable to a one to one ratio off your carburator or throttle body. If I remember correctly, I purchased a special part that goes on my carburetor for the cable, so it would have the correct pull on it.
Glad I could help. Good Luck!!!

You dont need a computer to make the 3 - 4 shift . Summit racing sells a kit to lock out the overdrive so you just get the 1,2,3 in town , My 91 gmc has had the 700r4 rebuilt three times . once was under warranty , the first and third time I had to pay for it at $1500 . And yes this shop is good , they rebuild 1000's of trannys a year . They dont care for the 700r4 either.
Best bet , go get a turbo 350.

The 700R4 is not computer controlled. If it was working fine 1 minute and the next minute it wasn't....I would think there may be some " trash " in the valve body. Pan and valve body need to be removed by a competent technician and worked on . You might consider a filter in the return line to catch anymore " trash " after repairs and a flush.

A 700R4 does not need a computer at all. It uses a govenor and a throttle valve cable. The problem is the 3-4 clutch. Believe me I rebuild about 2 a week for Chevrolet dealer.

yep its just a short time till other gears stop working the more you drive it now the more damage will happen to all parts, when you go to have this rebuilt, if you really want a good trans find some one who knows how to build it and drill the valve body to keep away from hard shifting, but still has the increased pressure to make it run cooler and longer, good GM hot rod mech knows lots of tricks to make this 700 r4 run long time with no problems, stk ones have problems, most add on kits make it shift hard and are damaging all drive train, plus you will increase your mileage by finding the right guy, believe me its worth the time and hunt for someone that knows what to do to make it run correct.

Mis-adjusted tv cable probably caused 3rd clutch to burn out, real common when swapped into earlier models where bracket for cable is not in sync with carb linkage,Lock-up t-converter is only thing controlled by computer on just some models.V-body can be fixed so that you don`t need the hot lead to elec conn, have done this on many early models.

No a 700R4 does not need a computer if it's set up to operate without one.
It's my bet your 3rd & 4th gear bands were neglected and you just need a rebuild.
