Depends on the type of fear. Some fear separates us based upon skin color, nationality, and culture. Other fear brings us together because of the nature of that fear and how it affects us as a whole nation (terrorism), yet some just because we need someone with us while we are scared (viewing a scary movie).

Fear is the most basic of emotions. If you are afraid and alone, you are just afraid. If you are afraid and with someone else, then you have a common fear. It is that communal feeling that bond people in a similar circumstance. Look at soldiers. People from most walks of life, from all over the country (and world), in one common place, with someone else's common bombs falling, and the common bullets ricocheting around, killing others around you that have had the common training, and the common travel experiences. That is why it is called a "brotherhood". You have matured to the common experience together. You have been there. They have been there. Those that have not been there just don't understand. The brotherhood exists in the military. It exists with police, firefighters, emergency workers, storm chasers, mariners, loggers, geeks, lawyers, mothers, teachers, etc, etc,.....

The point is, the fear does not have to be life threatening. Common bonds bring people together and strengthen their bond...the fear is of the unknown.

If one can successfully survive something fearful to them, he/she becomes stronger due to the strength gathered through that experience.

It is the same for couples, though sometimes one won't know how to cope with anothers pains and will end up pulling away from the other.

Living life's lessons means rolling with the punches.

Any time there is a common enemy or hard times of any kind, it brings folks together.

The best common enemies are fear , hatred, ignorance, things like that.
