Ok, heres my question. I went to a concert tonight, and when the guy onstage introduced the band, he also said thanks to the soldiers in Iraq for being over there and for keeping our freedom alive. I hear this same sentiment over and over again. How on earth does our own freedom here in the US have ANYTHING to do with whats going on over in Iraq? They arent trying to take our freedom away! Please help me to understand what the soldiers in Iraq have to do with our freedom here in the US?

the more countries that dont have freedom brings us a step closer to losing ours.

An example would be lets say there are 100 countries and 80 of them dont have freedom. they could gang up on us and the other free countries and take ours away.

so every country that has it makes ours safer.

The Iraqi people lived under a brutal dictator and didn't have the freedom we take for granted. If the soldiers over there can win this war then the Iraqi people will have the same rights and freedom that we have.

Maybe the band was grateful for the strong military we have and grateful that they weren't singing in German or Japanese. The war in Europe wasn't our problem either until it was made our problem on Dec. 7, 1941.

We owe our freedom to our soldiers because without them we are vulnerable to attack. They do the work that the rest of us can't or won't do. They risk their lives and in some cases lose their lives for us - on behalf of OUR country. A democratic Iraq (whether we like the fact that we are there or not) is in the best interest of the US. Democracy and freedom for others helps keep us secure. Military regimes, communist dictatorships and radical leadership in other countries can (and usually are) destabilizing and unpredictable. Any of them are a threat to us. North Korea is a current one. Japan, Germany and Iraq have been in the past. By fighting on our behalf, even if it is to ensure a democracy in a foreign country - our soldiers are keeping America secure. I know that I sleep easier with the knowledge that we have the most powerful military in the world. They keep us free.

It should not matter where in this world our soldiers are sent, if they are being sent in our name then they represent our country. Whether or not that group is infringing on our freedom is a question that neither of us REALLY KNOWS for sure. BUT, if our young men and women are losing a battle anywhere in this world then our freedom is at stake! Believe me. When Hitler began talking in the bars in Germany and aligning himself with other countries NOBODY knew what he could do in a short time. We do not want to see another war like that AGAIN... EVER! I hope that what I said makes some sense. Have a safe and peaceful holiday.

I think what people are talking about is that if we don't get involved when little third world countries are being annihilated then people like Osama or Hussein will take over those countries and use their resources to attack other countries and so on. Just think about the monopoly game. The more houses you own in that game the more control you have of the board.

Giving thanks for freedom to me is giving thanks that I don't have to live in a place like Kosovo where they kill just based on your religion or your race.

I am a disabled vet and I have seen those countries first hand. Children being sold because the family needs the money, women being oppressed, and men being slaughtered so that there are a less amount able men to fight.

You serious? For one, the military travels to other countries to keep those countries from coming over here, if you agree with that strategy or not. Two, thousands of military personnel have given their lives for our freedom in the past, and three, it's just the proper thing to do.

We are not fighting the Iraqi people. We are suppose to be setting them free. We are a strong nation that has the ability to help other people be free. The more free countries there are in the world the more secure everyones freedom is.
