I like Christopher Reeve best because he actually made Clark Kent and Superman look like two entirely different people. With Reeve as Superman, Superman's double life as Kent was a little more plausible. Brandon Routh was very good in Superman Returns, too. I think it was a good idea on the part of the director Bryan Singer to cast an unknown actor who could actually do a good job of portraying Superman.

I'm partial to Welling as Smallville is the most recent series. but if you have him in the running you need to include...

Tim Daly= Animated Series on kids WB
George Newbern= Justice League/Unlimited
John Newton= Superboy(ssn1)
Gerard Christopher=Superboy(ssns2-4)

In order:
1 Welling: Most recent/Continuous
2 Reeve: Iconic, first of the special effects age
3 Daly: sense of humor, great Lois banter
4 Reeves: Did well w/ material
5 Routh: has the look, still a little green
6 Alyn: before my time,
7 Christopher: worked the material well, better than predecessor
8 Newbern: decent successor to Daly
9 Cain: better Clark than Superman, Camp of show hurt
10 Newton: cheese material, made it work OK
11 Collyer: icon

Reeve and Routh. Both made Superman/ Metropolis Clark/ Smallville Clark look like completely different people and bring a certain quality that can make you relate and believe.

George Reeves

"Yes, it's Superman - strange visitor from another planet who came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men. Superman! Who can change the course of mighty rivers, bend steel in his bare hands, and who, disguised as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper, fights a never-ending battle for Truth, Justice, and the American Way!"

George and Christophr Reeve were father and son. Christopher was my favorite, but since he is no longer with us, I would have to say Tom Welling.

With the exception of that really horrible version in the 70s, where he sort of "rapped", and Tom Welling because I feel "Smallville" is an abomination, all of them. They all brought something different to the role, even though they all played it pretty much the same.
