This is a difficult question to answer. In nowadays, looking at the GHz is not a realiable way of measuring how good a processor is. It is the performance that matters. For example, The AMD Athlon is rated at only 2.0 GHz. But it is as good as an Intel Pentium IV processor at 2.6 Ghz. Currently, the Intel Core 2 Duo is the best all arround processor. But they are fairly new and cn be fairly expensive. But if you are a computer guy, i don't thin the price matters to you.

An intel Quad core Core 2 Extreme QX6700....$1000....don't get AMD's quad core unless you want Windows Vista Ultimate, won't on anything else, and it requires a huge amount of power....

It depends on whom you ask!
just like Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mitsubishi or Ferrari, Lamborghini, BMW, etc...
I like anything as long as it gets to run it's FASTEST on GNU/Linux (up to 50X faster than MS on all benchmarks!).
