I have been given a computer and told that i need to reformat it for it to work. I've looked on the net to try & find out what to do but i am a complete beginner unfortunately and have no idea what the hell i'm supposed to do! I don't have any disc's with the computer and i don't know what drivers are, what one's i need and where to get them from. It has to be said that i am completely baffled! :s If it wasn't for the fact that my accounts overdraft has reached it's maximum i would take this to someone who knows what they are doing, however i am completely broke this festive season and i wondered if any one reading this could please help me out and tell me exactly what i need to do.
Thanks in advance! :-)

You can't format from the Windows command prompt genius. You need to boot from your Windows install CD and type format c: from the command prompt there. That's the easy part. You'll need all the drivers for that computer to install a new OS. Not something to be undertaken lightly or by asking a bunch of yahoos from Yahoo for advice.

go to Start, and select the "Run" option. in the dialog box that appears, type the following: CMD.COM

and press ENTER

in the black screen that comes up, it will have a prompt that says C:\> and has a cursor waiting for a command.

at this prompt, type the following:

FORMAT C:

and press the ENTER key

you will be prompted to confirm that you actually want to erase the entire contents of the hard drive

At this prompt, type the letter Y and press the ENTER key

It will show progress of the format.

You will need to reinstall EVERYTHING, INCLUDING THE OPERATING SYSTEM after you format the hard drive

Simply go to http://ubuntu.org and ask them to mail you the FREE Operating System on the FREE CD, and that they pay the post.

Then, slip the CDrom for your Intel X86 32 bit system into the CD player, and boot from the CDrom.

It will make that HP machine run 50X faster than it ever ran under Windows 98SE, and it will be virus free!
