because you can always share with someone else... if you're down or blue or something, there's always someone there to cheer you up.. you start thinking you have to be cheerful about life coz of them.. that you don't want to get them upset..
knowing that you are loved by someone somewhere gives energy coz you know that you are good enough to be the only person loved by your lover, even though he/she has a wide variety to choose from, he/she chose you!
really it's a very complex answer, love gives a huge boost of self-esteem
