wont burn dvds i heard it only works with a specific brand of dvds does any1 know anything

I have an older HP I found had a liking for certain brand DVD's. However, you might want to try a few things. First off I would ask if you have tried DVD+R discs or are you using DVD-R discs? Mine prefers the DVD+R discs. Also you may want to adjust the speed of your writer. Windows probably has the default set to highest, select 8x and try it again. (You can acheive this by selecting your DVD drive from windows explorer, right clicking on it and selecting properties and then click on the recording tab to change the speed)
Also I highly recommend not running any other programs while the disc is running, it's fine if you are running nortons or anti-virus on auto enable, but you don't want to "multi-task" while the PC is trying to write to a disc. Good luck!

My cousin has a HP 740b. When his DVD burner started having similar problems, I upgraded the firmware for him. Now everything works fine. Here's a link to the page on the HP site that has the firmware update:
