something beautiful can rest so close to something to evil (the prison) It also will later signify the Scarlet letter that she has to wear on her bosom. It means something so derogatory in the beginning but later the letter stands for able instead of adulterer

It's used in contrast to the jail. The jail is dark and dreary and sucks the passion from Hester. The roses represent hope in a dark place.
