The harmonic balancer is on the engine, not the drive shaft. The drive shaft will spin fine without one, but the engine crankshaft will have problems without one.

the drive shaft transfers power from the back of the transmission to the rear axle.
i think you're think of a crank shaft, which is powered by the pistons. the harmonic balancer spins the opposite way of your crank shaft, to balance the engine. this is good for the engine. if yours is broken, and you can't afford to fix it, then don't. see how bad it is. and keep the engine at low rpm so you don't force the engine more than you have to and you can probably get away with it
i had a camaro a guy sold it to me cuz the engine had a knock. he'd beat the shlt out of it till it got a loud knock. i gave the engine to a friend who wanted it for an old truck. he's put another 50,000 miles on there and his guys beat the shlt out of his trucks.

Driveshafts don't have harmonic balancers. Engines do.
Driveshafts do need to be balanced so that they don't vibrate. An unbalanced dirveshaft will work but will vibrate. If the vibration is severe it will rather quickly destroy the u-joints and the various bearings in the driveline.

You probably mean drive shaft center support and bearing. No it will viberate and come apart. And you will be walking.
