Does one have to use subtitles when writing a 5 page essay

Personally, I wouldn't. For just five pages, you should simply try to relay as much info and thought as you can, while still remaining concise. Unless your essay deals with several different subjects which can't be tied together, I'd steer away from subtitles, as they're a somewhat tricky area. I believe their use is for longer essays, which deal with a somewhat discursive subject matter.

Subtitles are the things on the bottom of the screen when a movie is in a foreign language. I think you're using the wrong word here.
