On a cash flow, you are basically tracking "sources of cash" and "uses of cash".
Try looking at a company's cash flow on the yahoo-finance web site. It will give you a reasonable idea of what are the sources and the uses of cash (operations, financing, etc.)

Yes and No The net change in every Balance Sheet account, except Cash, is included in the Cash Flow Statement. In this case, the purchase of Machinery on account would be included under Investing Activity as negative cash flow and under Operating Activity as an increase in Accounts Payable, which is positive cash flow.
