Not everyone. I always spell out complete words (no Instant Messenger speak here) and spell them correctly. My job requires that I proofread constantly so I am a stickler for correct spelling. I'll agree that some Americans are getting lazy due to the ease of use of computers, email, cell phone pre-programming, etc., but not all.

Well...one thing is that language continues to evolve. Consider all the silent letters in a common word like "through"; wouldn't it be simpler for everyone if it were spelled like it sounds, "thru"? Or "thought" as "thot". On the net we do see people simplifying spelling, its part of the evolution of the language. Check a book done in the 19th century, you will see plenty of spellings that have changed, "to-day" was common then, but today it is...today!

Laziness, text messaging, instant messaging, short and sweet
it is much easier to type U for the word you and use abbreviation than check your spelling, we all know what "U" mean when "U" shorten thing up.

My theory on the subject is that people can no longer spell (or use proper grammar, for that matter) because they no longer READ. To learn to spell, you can't use rote memorization. You have to SEE the words spelled out repeatedly, and that means reading. Reading is also the way to learn good grammar. Reading for entertainment sees to be an endangered pastime, and I believe it shows in the poor spelling and grammar of the average individual today.

Do you also take offense to the millions of illegal aliens in this country, and millions more citizens that can't even speak the English let alone spell correctly.
I just don't think that that is right.

>Because 80% of young Americans are fat-assed, lazy, uncaring, self-centered dipshits. Education is just a huge interference to the non-reality they exist in.
Thank your favorite Deity for the other 20% and hope.<
