It truly depends on your car.
In the middle seat is it just a lap belt or a shoulder/lap-belt?
Does the middle seat have a latch system and or teether anchors?
If your middle seat has a shoulder lap-belt then you are okay with putting the baby in the middle (if the side seats don't have teether anchors or latch system)
If it only has a lap-belt then put the baby by the window (assuming those have lap and shoulder belts)
If you have a teether anchor or a latch system in your car USE them.
Call your Local Fire station and ask for a Car seat tech set up an appointment and go with the car seat and your car and they will make sure its put in properly and in the best place according to your car

If the child seat is placed in the middle it will be further out of the way if there is a side impact. If a door crushes in, the carseat is sitting right there and will more likely be hit.

Since the sides of the car, as well as the front and back ends, are the presumed points of contact in an accident, it seems logical to me to place the baby's car seat as far away from all of these surfaces as possible. Therefore, I would place the seat in the middle of the back seat - easily the most protected spot in the vehicle.

Place in the middle of the backseat. if you get hit on either side of the car the baby would be safer in the middle. You can also place a baby mirror in the back of the seat so you can see the child from your review mirror.
