My husband was 17 last year, and I got him the XBOX 360. It was a bit expensive, but he's a major gamer and absolutley loves it. I'm an avid gamer myself and I'm actually hoping to get the PS3 this year (maybe not for Christmas, but sometime). The kind of gift you get someone should reflect his tastes, and a something to represent the time and effort you put into it. Electronics and new systems are always nice, but a gift basket would work just fine as well. A nice way to go is to get a decent basket or similar item from your local discount store and fill it with raffia (natural colored or dyed) from a craft store. You can then put little things that he likes into it, like his favorite types of candy, drink mixes, snacks, sodas, etc. and a few small items that reflect his interests, such as a miniature poster or calendar of motorcycles if he's into automobiles, or his favorite animals. You can set of the sentimentality value by putting a nicely framed photo of the two of you or your entire family into the center of your basket as well. To finish it off, wrap it with some tulle or celephane in his favorite color and tie it off with a ribbon of a darker shade.

What about a jersey or hoodie of his favorite team or if he's not into sports, his favorite band. If you know his CD and DVD collections well enought, you could get him something to add to his collection. I bought my brother a trailer hitch cover and a hoodie that has a college on it he likes. He's older than 17, but guys usually like that kind of stuff.

What kind of music does he listen to? Favorite films (get a DVD)? Does he play any kind of video games? (Does he have a favorite movie which has been made into a video game?) What kind(s) of sports interest him? If he's a skater, there are tons of things you could get him -- cool T-shirts, sweats, accessories.

Boys that age are into cars, girls/boys, music and their friends. I would get him a cd and a poster of either a hot girl or boy and a calender of cars.
