I am a ballroom dancer and I have to do the splits and lift my leg vertical to the floor in a routine. I am not flexible at all. I already know that I need to practice every day, but are there any good stretches I can do or things that worked for you? Thanks!

now i can do both side split and a straddle(the middle split) because i have some stretch techniques that are useful. first u go down as far as u can go on ur side split and hold it for a few minutes. NO PAIN NO GAIN! u should feel that ur legs r stretched out and now do the other side split. when ur stretched, keep goin down. hold up your leg while standing( u know what i mean?) i know how u feel. i was not flexible but now ican do my splits!

side split stretches:
1st stretch:take a thick book and put it down on the ground then put one of your feet on it and go down into the splits position as far as u can and hold it there for like 2 minutes and switch legs.then do it without the book.
2nd stretch:put one leg straight in front and the other leg fully bended and try to touch your foot that is straight and hold it for like 1 min then switch legs.
3rd stretch do the splits as far as u can down and hold it for 1 or 2 mins and switch legs.
4th stretch:if u can do the splits then hold your front foot for 30sec-1min then sit straight and bend your back and extend your arms backwards and do it with the other leg.

middle splits:
stretch:do it as far down as u can and hold it there for 1 or 2min and rest for a few minutes and do it again.

and also yoga would help

im still learning myself how to do a split in my dance classes.

one exercise you can do is just start going into a spit as far as you can. and just hold it there until you cant any longer, and gently fall onto your side.
repeat that daily.
or as often as you like.
the stretch works best when your body is warmed up.
so if you dance first..then do the stretch.

our coach for dance team told us that if u go into ur split and then bend backwards u tend to fall into ur split more and it really does work for leg lifts put ur leg on someones shoulder and make them rise slowly until they are standing up straight, if that is too simple make them walk forward toward you or go on their toes
