Be very careful.
Any machine labeled "Vista Ready" is simply a machine with the required specs to run Vista. Often, this isn't even true.
Vista will be the most resource hungry version of Windows yet. I'd recommend an install of WinXP or Ubuntu for at least another year or two.
Also, I would need to know what specs your current machine has.

Run, do not walk, as far and as fast as you can from Vista. It has not been adequately tested. The upgrade with a coupon thing is not a good way to go. If you must have Vista, make sure it is on a computer and that it is factory installed. If this were in my lap, I would bypass all that Vista foolishness for now and find a good computer at an and of the year bargain price, and I would be looking at a Hewlett Packard because they are like a tank that will go across the desert. Wait at least a year before you even glance at Vista again. Let others test it out for you. Enjoy your new computer with Windows XP Professional, with whichever Service Pack you wish, if any at all. I hope this provides you a bit of perspective. Good luck to you! - Chris.

To be honest I wouldn't bother waiting for Vista.
I will buy 1xVista to learn it and because of the cost for my main PC I built in June ready for it, even then may not bother as now got an OEM Pro off ebay for £60.00. The rest of my PCs use OEM Home or OEM Pro. I updated the disks myself to SP2.
1. Prices will be excellent now and even in better in the New Year. So that is the best time. Some excellent deals on Notebooks if not worried about gaming.
2. Some PCs are coming with a deal to upgrade them to Vista weak version when released properly, whenever that is. And with any new product, it is initially buggy and where all the 'gits' of the Internet will be concentrating their viruses. Some PCs may be labeled ready for Vista, but until it is out fully you cannot be sure the PC utilises every feature of the software. Ie the graphics card incapable of the transparent modes etc. Vista Ready means can run Vista, not that it is designed for Vista.
IE7 already has been found to have a few flaws. In the address bar is the main one.
3. Although Vista will have some new features and M$ probably want us on it, it is expensive and not much different to XP under the cover. By the time Vista is any good, you may even want a newer PC from the one you have now. I've also heard rumours it will control music more to a specific PC.
In early 2008 XP will get SP3 - so still life in the product and Vista will probably start getting deals on it, so then XP will probably be better than Vista as SP3 will patch everything. The main thing about Vista v XP is the cost of it. XP is incredibly cheap to get now - see e-bay (make sure is sealed and check ratings) and then usually is just a matter of slipstreaming the disk to SP2, then later SP3 in 2008.
4. Having been on Me, XP and Vista will seem similar. It would probably be an advantage to learn Vista over XP. However, you can get a PC you can upgrade later, but they will be the more expensive PCs. Cheaper ones that have XP Home are likely to be a lot cheaper ie £399+ but do what you want.
The only real drag is, when you get XP you have millions of updates to do. But that is fine if know what you are doing...just very dull, but it is necessary to do.

Whatever you do, get rid of ME. I wouldn't worry about Vista, it's likely to be some time before it's reliable. You should get some bargains now on pc's running XP that aren't nominally "Vista ready", the dealers are flogging them off in favour of the new Vista craze.
XP's well-trodden, reliable and well supported.

Vista has not been really put to the test. I waited a year before getting Windows XP upgrade frpm ME. I think you would be smart to upgrade to XP first, and then wait a bit.
