If you can't get to safe mode, then boot to the dos prompt. If you can remember the directory your file was in you can copy it from dos to a floppy. Dos was packaged with win95, so if you have any of the manuals that can with the comptor, they will be handy for the comands to use. If not post back and I will try to assist you.

You should have a black screen with white letters and a blinking cursor, it may be a line or a box.

type dir /p (notice the space after dir)
hit enter.
This will bring up the directory of c:\ one page at a time. To get the next page hit any key. Once you find the right directory you will have to change to it. The syntax will be something like this:
cd c:\your directory (space after cd) hit enter
dir hit enter
once you've located the file
copy c:\your directory\yourfile a:\

If your XP computer is a desktop you should have some empty connectors on the hard drive ribbons you can plug the old drive into. You just have to figure out how to change the jumpers on the old drive to "slave" They'll be marked somewhere on it.
