I have a silver color coin the size of a quarter, it has "500" and "2005" on one side and a picture of what looks like a water crane bird on the other side. Writing appears to be asian. Any ideas? Thanks!

It sounds like you have a 500 Won coin from South Korea. It has a Manchurian crane on the obverse with 3 characters under it. On the reverse at the top is the date with a large 500 under it in the middle and 4 characters under it. The coin is KM# 27 under South Korea. It takes 960 Won to be worth a Dollar U.S.. It is made of copper-nickel not silver. Hope this answers your question.
