If you go to the local Lowes, Home Depot or Hardware Store -- they have a extendable pole that has a screw end -- and on that end you screw on plastic pieces, that you just lift the pole to the edge of the roof, tuck under the last tile, twist the pole off, and do this along the entire roofline first.

Then, with the same pole -- it also has an attachment where you can hook on the light string itself, lift the string into the clip area, and just let it rest there.

This is how I do it now -- especially since I am older, and I have difficulty getting up and down ladders (I've had a lot of broken bones -- and there are some that are fused -- making going up ladders painful). I'd much rather stay on the ground and use this device (It is called Holiday Lighting Pole -- look for more of the plastic clips nearby at the store) than have to be in pain from going up and down a ladder.

Actually, there are clips available at any home hardware store that will clip to your gutters and the lights. It isn't permanent and it goes up in seconds. Staples or other invasive items can damage the area. You can even leave the clips there to be ready for next year since they don't show up...they are a clear plastic.

It depends on your roof. Yes, there are clips you use with a non-tile roof (tiled roofs have different clips). They work great. I found some at Wal-Mart.

Staples, but be careful not to staple the actual lights- just fix it between and the staples will hold them down. I have seen nails driven and lights "twisted" around them to secure in place, but that might not hold as well.
