Ideal size? I assume you are looking for memory, I would say 512mb of video memory, although 256 works pretty well, depending on what games you play, and definitely a dual GPU card, such as one of the PCI express Nvidia cards.

for most of todays games to get a decent playing experience your looking at 256 absolute minimum, preferably 512 or if you can afford £350+ then you can get them with 768 or even 1024mb ram.
more is better but all cards are different and their performance dosent just depend on the memory size but also the core and memory speed measured in mhz.
256mb cards can range from £45 to about £100 and generally the more you pay the beter it is.
Still, if you have the best £450 graphics card but a slow processor and not enough ram in the computer your games will still play bad or not atall - in other words the more expensife they are the better your pc in general needs to be otherwise you might as well go for a cheaper one.
Ok to finalise, if your on a mid range pc and don't want to spend a fortune then a radeon 9800pro would be a good choice, probably cost you around £40 - £60

Well i would suggest you mention first what kinda games you are trying to play and the budget you are dealing with after that it becomes a lot easier for others to accurately help you. Also if your going to play games than the more MB the card has the better.

If your a serious gamer, then you probably need a 256MB or if you can get your hands on one a 512MB.
I went for a 256MB.
