Is there anything in particular anybody uses to start conversation to get to know others better? I have found that for me, I usually don't know what to say around people I have just met so it's harder for me to make new friends, etc. On the other hand, I've seen some people meet totally new people and seem to be good friends within a few minutes. Can anybody offer any advice for me?

I would greatly appreciate any help!

I suppose it depends on the environment you are in. If it is a company gathering, you can always discuss the last company meeting or the progress of the company; how the stock is doing, etc. If it is at someone's house and you don't know everyone, you can introduce yourself if the host hasn't already and start talking how you guys met the host. You can always talk about the latest movie, your likes and dislikes. You can discuss the latest books or good books you'd recommend.

If you really have a hard time talking to someone, lots of people start conversations about the weather. From there you can go to movies that revolved around the weather (e.g., perfect Storm, etc.) which could lead to books about the movies. :)

i usually say hello. and smile. a great big smile. that makes you approachable and willing to converse. it's all in the facial expressions and body language. don't forget about the attitude. if your rolling your eyes or not making eye contact. of course no one will want to speak to you. if you have your back to someone or not really showing good edicate (like crossing your arms, tapping your foot etc) that wouldn't help either. and last but not least, if someone talks to you and you respond with a negative comment or short 1 word answers, then they will feel the vibe and not want to continue the convo.

so do your best to appear friendly and approachable and people will continue the conversation.

good luck.
