my computer is really screwed up.
It has been infected with some type of virus, and my anti virus things, Norton, Windows Defender, and Spybot Search and Destroy fail to locate the problem. It makes my computer unable to start up for HOURS, so i cant turn it off or even put on standby, and the CD/DVD drive/burner is not even registered on the computer, it wont show up in my computer, windows media, nero, iTunes, or ANYTHING. it will not even open, the drive is totally unresponsive. i need to burn my Mp3s to a DVD to save them because i do not want to loose all 1.80 GB of music i have bought or been sent by friends, and if i am ever able to do that i want to blank the whole computer and start from scratch. is it true that FireFox is less likely to get viruses than internet explorer? PLEASE HELP ME! it is driving me truly insane.

Sounds like you might have a Hard Drive problem or a mother board problem. Doesn't sound like any virus I've encountered. I'd almost be willing to bet you're hard drive is gone, however the fact that it fails to recognize other devices suggests it could be the mother board. Good luck, hope you find the problem.

P.S. Ever since I had a Hard Drive go bust on me, I always have a 2nd Hard drive in my PC now. I recently bought an HP Media centre, I also got the removable drive and I keep all my documents and media files on it. I only run operating systems on my PC hard drive. That way ... I never loose my Data. always have a back-up.

If you're in a hurry, obtain the largest USB drive you can get your hands on and just switch your music over to it.

One solution to this would be to get an external memory and just copy and paste your desired files to it, then just reformat your pc.
Secondly just make sure its not a hardware problem, open up your pc and clean it and take a look around in there (Make sure to unplugg it first :). Another thing if it applies to you is don't download music from places that are crawling with virus because some are not registered with norton's database and the program will never find it. Hope some of this helps.

You could try the System Restore which takes you back to a time when your computer was working good. Go To:
start
programs
accessories
systems tools
system restore
This process is completely reversable. And does not remove your personal files. Just go back one checkpoint at a time until your puter is working good again.
You may need to reinstall any recent software programs, but it is a quick fix when you dont know what else to do.

I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html
The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html

I would take your computer and all of your source disks to one of those in-house computer service dept's they have at the major electronics stores. Tell them your computer won't boot and that you would like them to backup your harddrive to a separate disk, wipe, then reinstall windows on your machine, then reinstall your software and move your music, etc. back to your machine.

Then go right over and buy a backup hard-drive to keep those important files safe in the future.

And yes, use FireFox.

unfix your hdd and fix it to another computer (one of your friends computer) as secondary hdd... but be careful that if your friend has a good anti virus or not.. after you fix it to your friend's PC first update your friend's anti virus and then scan and clean your hdd.. after that you can do anything you want.. i advise you to use
Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0.1.411
for anti virus.. Norton or any other stuff is not that much good..
kasp is the best AV.. try to find it.. also you can buy... or order from its official web site.. also find
ad-aware plus..
if you use kasp + ad-aware at the same time.. no viruses, bugs, worms or trojans can give harm to your computer.. hope these information is enough to fix your problem..
