Freemasons Plan One-Day Membership Drive
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The Freemasons of Ohio hope to
continue their recent success at bringing in new members by hosting Grand
Master's One Day Classes at 11 locations in Ohio on April 9, 2005.
This innovative membership program will mark only the third time it has
been tried in the 215 years that Masonic Lodges have existed in Ohio.
A Grand Master's Class enables new members to receive all three of the
traditional Masonic initiation ceremonies in one day. Normally, the
initiation process is spread over several months.
Considered to be a revolutionary idea by Ohio Freemasons in 2002, the
overwhelming success of the Grand Master's Class has won it greater acceptance
among a fraternity deeply rooted in tradition. The first two attempts at
accelerating the membership process garnered more than 10,000 new members for
the Freemasons, and earned Ohio national recognition for its efforts.
"We were surprised and pleased by its success," said George Braatz, Grand
Secretary for the Ohio Freemasons. "Many people today are reluctant to wait
three months to be a member of an organization. If they are going to join
something, they want to be members immediately."
The Freemasons are also breaking with tradition by taking the leap into
technological advancement and now communicating extensively on its statewide
website, http://www.freemason.com . They are also trying to increase public
awareness through the use of marketing strategies that include paid
advertisements at the movies.
"In addition to our ads, we hope that all the positive publicity brought
on by the movie National Treasure will help to make this year's membership
program even more successful," said Braatz. "As Freemasons, we believe that
our strong traditions of brotherhood and charity are real American treasures."
There are currently 540 local Masonic Lodges in Ohio with a combined
membership of 124,000. Annually, Ohio Freemasons contribute $15 million to
charities that include Ohio Special Olympics, college scholarships, and
elderly care.
Ohio Freemasons hope that a continued influx of new members will help to
keep their fraternity and their traditions alive for years to come.
