That pack a day of smokes comes out to $300 a month and $3600 a year, not even meantioning the beer and scratch offs.

All the poor people I know smoke at least a pack a day in their households. I never smoked. Why is it necessary? I don't understand, if you don't have the money, and you have kids, it's irresponsibility at it's height to blow thousands a year on your bad habits alone. Someone's getting shortchanged and it's usually the children...
how selfish.

You are an imbecile, guilty of the worst form of class prejudice. People are poor - oh that means it must be THEIR fault. Oh wait, maybe it's because they had the misfortune to be born to poor parents, (who in turn were born to poor parents, and so on, leading all the way back to the days of fuedalism, where nobody except the nobility had ANYTHING), went to a poor school and got a bad education there (what good teacher would want to teach there?) left and got a bad job. Then got laid off because some rich person decided they couldn't afford to keep paying them, so sacked them in order to fund their trip to the Bahamas.

Ok, sure, there are some lazy people who will do nothing but sponge off others - but is it just to punish them (and their families) by one sweeping gesture eliminating ALL support for poor people? Of course some people by working hard and being incredibly lucky can work their way out of poverty and become successful - but it's tough.

And here's another little eye-opener for you, poor people are unhealthy. Know why? Because they can't afford to buy expensive low fat food and be a member of a gym. Do you seriously believe that ONLY poor people smoke, and that all of the poor do? Come off it - you cannot picture a corporate boardroom without cigars lit with hundred dollar bills.

Nobody with any sense will 'make excuses' for those too lazy to bother. However those with a conscience will accept that some people have had a harder life than you. They've had to leave school early to help support their family. Their parents couldn't afford to put them through college. Whatever. These people do not need to be told to 'stop being lazy', they _NEED_HELP_

Why don't you stop living your privaledged preppy cheerleader lifestyle and actually find out what being poor is actually like? You think people would choose to live like that if they had a choice? You think they're ignorant and stupid - that getting a better job is just so much EFFORT. For God's sake open your eyes - or at least read down and out in London and Paris.

Why don't you get a life instead of doing nothing but criticizing others? Also, get your facts straight, a pack a day doesn't cost $300 a month, not where I live. You're doing nothing more than blowing smoke up people's @sses.

I know many poor people... few can afford to smoke?

but, the poor I know are very responsible, some have made bad choices, but due to that, many have almost no chance now?

is that how it should work? one mistake and done? poor for life?

I have a feeling you know one poor family... and assume all are like that... spend a little time in a poor neighborhood, know what you are talking about...

What does smoking, beer and scratch offs have to do with personal responsibility and being poor?

I'm not a "liberal" and I make no excuses for "personal responsibility".

I'm a "moderate" and I believe in working and saving for my own future. Because both the "liberals" and "conservatives" sure as heck are not doing anything for me.

Actually, the right thing is to be conservative with yourself and liberal with others. In other words, everyone should indeed strive to be self-sufficient and personally responsible, but you also need to know that human failing runs pretty deep and many people who seem otherwise capable wash out even in our society where lots of opportunity exists. The problem with being conservative with others is it is a mean-spirited attitude, and the problem with being liberal with oneself is that it is a laziness. So be tough on yourself, and generous with others, and you find the most fulfilling way to live.

Many poor people were BORN poor, and stay poor. Social mobility may exist, but people usually don't go from poor to middle class...
People have bad luck, or go through hard times, and usually selfish people who have everything handed to them don't understand things like that.

They think the government should do everything. Which is ridiculous, because everyone knows the government does almost everything badly. Just compare the public school system (total disaster) to the the private school system (among the best in the world)... The only thing a government does well is kill people...

not all are poor because of bad personal responsibility or choices. Sometimes they hit a run of bad luck. Because of this fact, that is the only reason I donate money and other things to charities

I think there is a big difference between enabling people who are addicted to bad habbits - that lead to health problems -x- and having a social safety net. The question is where do you draw the line?
