They should leave it as it is. Dermot Morgan wanted to end the series and that should remain that way. It's like Fawlty Towers is perfect as it wasn't flogged until unfunny. Red Dwarf being a prime example as you seem to be aware of.

Oh, absolutely.
It's up there with Fawlty Towers, One Foot In The Grave, Blackadder, Red Dwarf, Only Fools And Horses, Absolutely Fabulous, Spaced, The Peep Show, The Day Today, Black Books, Phoenix Nights.
And I thought they only made 3 series of Father Ted, and a christmas special before he died.

too true ! father ted is a brilliant sit com, i've seen all the episodes several time, and i still laugh out loud at it. it is an awful shame that the actor that played father ted died so young, but i don't think that they should try to resurrect the series.... it would never be the same without him, some things are best left alone. i too also love blackadder (in particular series 2 & 3), only fools and horses, and red dwarf. i was never really a huge fan of Bottom though, i still prefer The Young Ones.

Father Ted - The actors were Irish, and it was mostly made in ireland, but it was made by a british production company and shown on channel 4, so yes, it does qualify as British, as well as Irish. It was brilliant, so light hearted and funny, and coming from me, who grew up in a small Irish town, quite true to life! :) It launched Graham Norton and Ardal Ohanlon in the Uk too, so most def deserves to be in there!
But it wouldnt be the same without Ted, It will be always remembered as a classic I think!

I rate Father Ted very highly, it was sublimely ridiculous, the torured Mrs Doyle, the blithely innocent Dougal (Oh, yes, Ted!) and the rapacious behaviour of Father Jack. There, bang in the middle of this recipe for chaos, is Father Ted. He thinks he is the only one who is coping and thinks that he is switched on. The poor man lurches from one toe-curling situation to the next and, let's be honest, old Ted is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, is he? On top of that, he is burdened by sexual repression, trying to prevent a Dougal-based ecological disaster and anticipating Jack's next move, all the while dealing with his own Catholic guilt. It's a great loss to comedy and to Ireland to lose Dermot Morgan at a tragically young age. Can you imagine him now in work like The Wind That Shakes The Barley? I loathe the word, "potential" and think of it as estate agent (realtor)speak for nothing's been done. Dermot Morgan's potential as a serious actor, IMHO, was vast.
There were many terrific characters in it, the writers never felt bound by logic. I particularly liked the couple who owned the supermarket, they were at one another's throat, really nasty and spiteful, until Father Ted came in. Then they were sweetness and light - the perfect couple. There was a mad Kerryman used to pop up from time to time and he took the word, "thick" to new heights, fabulous.
Sorry, I've, what was, gone too far, Ted, I am getting confused, what were we doing, my Mother told me, I have to lie down, Ted.......Ted?
'Night all.

father ted is a classic irish comedy. irish people love it. i think poor mrs doyle seems to be most peoples favourite. its definately up there top five. i have alot of the videos. they are all great i dont know what one i would choose. yes, it is a shame that the lead actor died. but in his memory i think they should resurrect the series as a tribute. one foot in the grave would have to be up there with rising damp and only fools and horses. rigsby was a classic too!! steptoe and son close behind.

Definitely in the top 20 if not the top 10.
Mrs Doyle's character was often overlooked I think.
I do not think it could be the same without Dermot Morgan though.
They only made 3 series though,not 4

Definitely in my top 5 - if written well, another episode would be quite entertaining, but the loss of Dermot Morgan is very sad (he also died at the end of the 3rd series).
For now, I'm quite pleased with the IT Crowd, which has the same well scripted humour by the same writer.
