The trad answer to, "What do you give a man who has everything?" is: "Penicillin!"
(Unless he's allergic, as I am!)
If you are still up-to-date with his likes and dislikes, give him vouchers relating to the areas he's 'into' so he can pick his own book, clothes, plants, electrical goods/whatever. (My birthday is in December + I remember at 18 - not 28 - my mother bought me some BAD clothes for it, then wanted to go with me to buy some more for a Christmas present! Ugh! I think males stop wanting their mothers to pick presents, esp clothes, at about 8!) That way he gets the freedom to decide and can either bring it or show you when you visit.

You could try a move away from 'material objects' - tickets to an event, mystery flight tickets, take him (and his significant other) out for dinner. Then again, you might be able to get someone closer to him to find out something he doesn't have (and isn't getting).

At 28 I would have loved for someone to give me a SWISS ARMY KNIFE with its various blades and its holster.
Its very useful and neath.

Find something in a store that says."I Love You!" It could be a piece of jewelry, a wall plaque, a card, or something personal that belongs to you or his dad.
