I assume that in your statement "...they are tellin me..." that 'they' are microsoft? or are you refering to just an alert that says you need to reactivate?

If all is as you state, if the online reactivation will not work, call them (Microsoft) using the toll free telephone number that is provided on the failed activation attempt on the website. They will ask some specific questions, so just give them the answers. People replace hard drives all the time. You ARE allowed to do this.

If you have originla software CDs you can install. Check up for keys in the CD . I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some drive problems can be easily fixed by yourself using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.

You needed to get the old keycode your computer came with so you could enter it instead of the one the CD had. If you can't find the original key, you'll just have to buy a new copy of XP.

VzjrZ is correct, if you have the OS and want to use it Microsoft will alow that. It would help if you had a Product code.
