OK, that was the answer. Now the question is ... ???

What was "testing testing 1 2 3" used for?

And the answer to the question for the answer is ...

A. Some Indian smoke signals to see if the air was clear enough to see from one hilltop to another

B. An early test to see if a television signal was being transmitted

C. An early test to see if a telegraph signal was being transmitted

D. An early test to see if a radio signal was being transmitted

E. An early test to see if a telephone signal was being transmitted

F. An early test to see if a signal was being transmitted over a taut string connecting two tin cans

G. An early test of what's now called the "Emergency Broadcast System" (formerly a civil defense early warning system)

[Edit: H. A phrase often uttered into an occasionally operable microphone by a harried principal trying to get 800 middle school children to settle down in the aging school auditorium.
End edit]

My guess is that the answer to the question for the answer is either D or G (and more likely G). It involved radio, which uses voice communication.

It's not A or C since they use what amounts to dots & dashes. It's not B since that used a visual test pattern. For the telephone (E), legend has it that A.G. Bell said, "Watson, I need you." And the first radio communication (I think) was, "What hath God wrought!"

So I guess that leaves those old tests of the Emergency Broadcast System's predecessor that they used to do at noon every Saturday: "testing testing 1 2 3"

Unless, of course, it was those two tin cans I strung together, trying to get a Boy Scout merit badge ...
