Groundhog Day with Bill Murray perhaps? He keeps repeating the same day over and over and tries to save this homeless old man, but he always dies.

The first movie I thought of was "With Honor's" with Brendan Fraser. It takes place at Harvard. A bunch of students live together; they sorta adopt a homeless Joe Pesci. I'm pretty sure he dies in the end.
